The neutral solution of formaldehyde is effective in keeping its morphological characteristics of protozoans, eggs and larvae of helminths. The preservative is 5% neutral buffered formalin. Indicated for Lugol stain.
The combination of formaldehyde with sodium acetate and acetic acid acts as a buffer, promoting excellent fixation of organisms with maintenance of morphological characteristics and facilitating microscopic analysis. The SAF preservative (sodium acetate, acetic acid and formalin) was developed to be used also in permanent trichrome staining.
